Dr. Charles Jay DeWitt, 92 of Farmville passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2013 in Farmville. He was born August 3, 1920 in Kingston, NY to the late Charles P. and Theresa McHugh DeWitt. He served his country during WWII in the United States Army. He then taught high school biology in Victoria. Dr. DeWitt was a lifelong educator; retiring from Longwood College as a Psychology professor in January 1986. He was an athlete and very much a sports enthusiast. Dr. DeWitt, at the age of 78, made his first of two hole in ones at the old number 8 at Longwood Golf Course. He loved football and had season tickets to enjoy his University of Virginia Wahoos. He loved animals especially dogs, having cared for 14 german shepherds. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret DeWitt.
He is survived by his children, Charles Jay DeWitt, Jr. (Ramona) of Waynesboro, VA and Alison DeWitt (David Norman) of Newport News. Also surviving are his four grandchildren, Bradley Spencer DeWitt, Taylor Lanier DeWitt, Andrew DeWitt Walker and Lyndsey Erin Walker; his special caretaker for many years, Margaret Harvey and his loyal companion and friend, Rommel.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, April 9, 2013 11:00am at Trinity Memorial Gardens in Rice. Family will receive friends Tuesday morning at 10:00 at the Shorter Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Buckingham Squad Care, Alzheimer’s Association in memory of Margaret DeWitt or to the University of Virginia. Shorter Funeral Home is serving the family.
