Shirley Ann Calhoun Whaley

Shirley Whaley was born on July 24th, 1935 to the union of Joseph and Louise Calhoun in Cumberland, Virginia.

Shirley accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful friend of Jesus. She loved to serve the local church and lived a life of integrity and heart for the Lord.

Shirley met the love of her life Hayes Whaley in school. They married young and were life long companions. And to this union were born two beloved daughters Debbie and Janice. Shirley was a hard worker and retired after working 29 years at Longwood University. She loved music and cared for her family well in the ways she spoke, gave, cooked, and showed up everyday.


Shirley Whaley departed this life on Sunday, January 19th, 2025. She was proceded in death by her father Joseph Calhoun, mother Louise Calhoun, two brothers Clyde and Willard Calhoun, son in law Lawrence Huddleston and husband Hayes Whaley.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory: her sister in law Liz Calhoun, her daughters Debbie Crenshaw (Ron) and Janice Huddleston, two grandsons Carson Crenshaw and Cody Huddleston (Savannah), one great grandson Lawson Huddleston, two nieces, two nephews and a host of other loved ones and great friends.

The family asks that instead of flowers that donations be made to Cumberland Memorial Garden Fund or Cumberland Presbyterian Church. 

A visitation will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025 from 10:00AM –11:00AM at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. A funeral service will follow starting at 11:00AM with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Shorter Funeral Home is serving the family.
